First Camp of the Summer

When the Cisco Kid starts sixth grade he said he is interested in joining band. That is only after he went to beginning band camp all week. When I told him that he was going to Beginning Band Camp, he immediately said he wants to play the Trumpet.  I mentioned to him that he will have to try all the instruments and produce, high, medium and low sounds.

Prior to camp they had a day where they had an Instrument matching session.  The room was filled with all the instruments and student teachers for each one.  The Camp student sat with each teacher for about fifteen minutes learning how to produce high, medium and low sounds.  If the camp student was successful in producing those sounds, their sheet was signed off for that instrument.  He tried all the instruments and he was successful on them all.  I have to say....That boy can whale out some notes.  I have know idea if it's because he swims and that really exercises his lunges or if he just has large lungs.  OMG!!!

After the Camp students were finished with the instrument matching session the teacher had them make three choices.  1st favorite, 2nd favorite, and 3rd favorite.  There were about 30 camp students at the Instrument Matching session and it was nice to see that they all got their first choice instrument.  I think I would have been disappointed if The Cisco Kid did not get his 1st favorite.  After all it is Band Camp and it should be exciting and fun.

During the first week the camp student learned the basics of reading music, the basics of being part of a musical ensemble, how to assemble their instrument without breaking it, basics of how to care for their instrument, begin to learn how to produce a good quality sound and learn several notes.

So far he said he want to go again next year.  I guess that is a good sign.  But I have to say.....I cant wait until our three month rental is up and that INFERNAL Trumpet goes back.

Some of the other instruments he tried.  Tuba and Trombone.
